Nei Gong Workshop with Steve Galloway February 10-11, 2018 Atlanta, GA

Practitioners awaken the energy body though the lower dantian through a combination of body alignment, controlled breathing and intent. By aligning structure to enable efficient flow of Earth qi to the Lower Dantien, the dantien enhances qi circulation through our energy body.

Recent classes have focused on lower body alignment and breathing in static postures. Over the weekend on February 10 - 11, Steve will work with upper body alignments and considerations required in Wuji and in dynamics to manage qi flow within the body and also beyond structure using features from the Dragon Dao Yin.

Location: Harmony Place Spiritual Center/The Big Blue Barn, 1035 Green Street, Roswell, GA 30075

Nei Gong Workshop September 30 - October 1, 2017

The purpose of the series of events in Atlanta over the last two years has been to sensitize students to their energetic body. At one level, there is a sense of achievement in learning the physical aspects of Dao Yin and Qigong. At a deeper level though, Nei Gong helps us observe what the energy body does and it is not really until students experience this that they understand what it takes both physically and emotionally to regulate energetics. It takes two to three years to develop the early stages of this skill and at our last event it seemed that things started to "click" for people.

This is an important achievement and it should be rewarding. Moving forward, practitioners consolidate their training and improve their ability. We do this by examining and tuning aspects of the exercises we have been working with in the light of what experience now tells us. For instance, what is intent as opposed to concentration, and how much lengthening and opening can we sustain before these techniques become tension themselves? Several students are at a point where experience can start giving them answers.

When dealing with structure, Qigong practitioners often hear teachers encouraging students to lift their head "as if suspended by a golden thread". This is a useful aid for newcomers to rely on. In the longer term, however, simply suspending one's head this way does not help build root and may even contribute to a weak root. So, as we develop our skill, we modify technique to develop skills for "filling".

Surprisingly, the art of filling does not happen from the ground up. Instead, it happens by successfully dropping mass first.  With practice, at some point the opening of the spinal vertebrae - or the "celestial pillar" - and other joints happens by dropping mass through the body which in turn causes the body to "inflate", or "fill". Provided we are able to drop mass, filling happens automatically, helping practitioners to open joints. In Taijiquan, this condition is called "peng".

At our event on September 30th we will examine techniques to learn how, by sinking physical tension and releasing soft tissues through the body using breath and intent, the body's soft tissues can start "filling" to instill expansion through the joints. The technique, called "Sung", is crucial in arts like Taijiquan and Qigong, and helps practitioners control upward distribution of qi which can lead to sometimes surprising results at an early stage of the nei gong process.

At this stage, practitioners are better equipped to evaluate what it takes physically and emotionally to optimally transport information with the acquired meridiens, and over the next few events we will turn attention to improving and conditioning sensitivity to the "jing luo" using our syllabus material.

The event is suitable for returning students and newcomers.

June Nei Gong Workshop - Atlanta, June 3-4, 2017

Over this weekend, Steve will look at techniques for more efficiently purging pathogens from the body.

Following an established process of improving physical fitness, practitioners begin to sensitize to their underlying energetic constitution, and as the energetic “body” begins to regulate by purging, practitioners move through the Nei Gong process, eventually developing requisite skills for Nei Dan.

Our bodies play a principle role in connecting Heaven and Earth and in pursuit of this core Daoist principle the spine, often referred to as the “celestial pillar” plays both a symbolic and functional role. Over this weekend Steve will work with targeted stretching and Dao Yin to open the spine and with co-ordination of breathing techniques will examine how to manage body mass, or qi.

The weekend assumes practitioners are practiced at the Dragon Dao Yins so that we can refine techniques through the application of “ting”, and develop processes to efficiently lead pathogens from the body. However, newcomers are welcome.

Supporting material will be provided via an Evernote notebook for those wishing to go deeper with their practice.

Five Elements February Workshop

Over two days Steve builds on 5 Element Theory to help practitioners connect 5 Elements’ theoretical propositions with practical experience. Nei Gong relies on Qigong practice to help practitioners test propositions by connecting to meridians like Heart, Spleen, Lungs, Kidney, and Liver. By sensitizing to meridians, practitioners can attach to predictable attributes established in Five Element theory.

The workshop cover physical conditioning, Nei Gong, and a series of Qigong exercises to help practitioners connect with the Five Elements. Five Element Theory is a dynamic which establishes predictable associations between the energetic and physical realms.

The workshop is open to newcomers and continuing students. It can be viewed as a standalone workshop with no prior experience necessary. It is also a workshop in the continuing series of Nei Gong workshops offered by Steve in Atlanta. Included in this workshop, Steve will work with Lotus Nei Gong's Level 1 Nei Gong syllabus.

Location: 87 S. Peachtree Street, Norcross, GA 30071

Dates: February 4 - 5, 2017 9:30 - 5:00

Over the last two years LNG’s Atlanta events have followed a structured approach to Nei Gong, encouraging improvement in physical flexibility to help practitioners engage with aspects of their energetic system. As ability improves, predictable attributes which we associate with “connection” to the components of the energetic system – heart, lungs, etc., become easier to tap into.

Five Element Theory is a Daoist paradigm which explains how the Jing – Qi – Shen proposition more fully explains creation and the physical world. With the help of written notes which we encourage students to assimilate in advance, over this weekend (Date?) Steve Galloway will introduce Five Element theory, and how we use arts like Nei Gong to test the propositions set out in Five Element Theory.

The objective of the weekend is to continue LNG’s emphasis for improved physical flexibility and an understanding through the use of Wu Xing and other practices how theory can be tested with direct experience. This is a fundamental aspect of Daoist practice.

This event builds on previous work in Atlanta and although progress is dependent on individuals’ continuing development with their Nei Gong process, the event is open to all. Notes will be provided in advance to attendees using the usual Evernote platform to help students understand the concepts we will be working with.

Over two days, in May 2016, LNG's Steve Galloway will consolidate exercises assimilated so far in the Atlanta syllabus program with application of internal techniques to introduce and or develop the Nei Gong process. Nei Gong is a process rather than an application. Practitioners use Qigong as an application to help practitioners connect to their energetic body. By developing the physical aspects of Qigong exercises, practitioners turn their attention to internalized practices to understand how to lead qi.

The May 21st - 22nd event will examine existing material in greater detail, introduce the concept of 5 Elements within the context of Daoist creation theory, and expand on material contained in Damo Mitchell's two books, The Four Dragons and Heavenly Streams.

The event is open to newcomers and in keeping with LNG Atlanta's syllabus program, will be accompanied by an online notebook featuring supporting written material and suggested reading.

Nei Gong Foundations Feb 2015

Awesome Workshop!

We had a terrific weekend learning the foundations of Nei Gong with Steve Galloway of Lotus Nei Gong. We are fortunate that such a skilled instructor visits us here in North Georgia! It was a weekend of laughter and hard work. We look forward to Zom's return in the spring.

Thank you to David Latimer for his photography services.
